- c.1385, "an account brought by one person to another," from O.Fr. report, from reporter "to tell, relate," from L. reportare "carry back," from re- "back" + portare "to carry." Meaning "formal statement of results of an investigation" first attested 1661. Meaning "resounding noise" is from 1590. Reporter in the newspaper sense is from 1813; hence, reportorial (1860).
